News

Here are some recent statistics about Jacmel: 1,785 homes destroyed, 87 businesses, 54 schools, 24 hotels, and 26 churches. The death toll was around 3,000, which represents 10 percent of the population of Jacmel. Finally, 5,730 families are displaced. Of the PAZAPA families, 10 homes have been completely destroyed and 37 more homes were damaged and need repairs.

Food has been distributed to the PAZAPA families twice, once from the PAZAPA stores and once from Catholic Relief Services. Families recei ed wheat, soy, beans, and oil. The distribution was done out of Marika MacRae’s house and everything was done in a calm and orderly fashion, thanks to the dedication of the PAZAPA staff and the cooperation of the families.

Day by day, the staff has been gradually emptying the Center’s main building and storing certain items in the storage room in the backyard. So far all computers have been removed, as well as the DVD, TV, and all casting materials and files.

Discussions are underway with Healing Hands Canada about rehabilitation efforts in the Jacmel area.

PAZAPA is still looking for a temporary operating site as well as property to build a new facility.

We are very grateful to everyone who has donated to help with relief efforts. We know that rebuilding will be a long process, and we hope that all those who care about Haitians and PAZAPA will continue to support our efforts!

Seeking expertise in psychological trauma

We would like to connect our PAZAPA staff and children with psychological trauma specialists. Ideally we would like to find people who could travel to Haiti soon, and care providers must speak Haitian Kreyol. Please email suem@siloe.org if you have any leads.

Medical team to Jacmel

In collaboration with the Haitian Timoun Foundation, First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor and Doctors United for Haiti, we organized a medical team to travel to Jacmel on Friday, Jan. 22. They arrived via the Dominican Republic on Saturday, Jan. 23 along with two tons of supplies and equipment. The team is working in Cayes-Jacmel and has performed more than 40 critical surgeries and seen and treated more than 800 patients. They even delivered a baby! All patients previously in critical condition are stable or better. One patient was airlifted to the US because of paralysis. Cash and medications were delivered to PAZAPA. The best news: 0 deaths!

Current news about PAZAPA

Executive Director Marika MacRae and her children are safe, as are the children and staff of PAZAPA. Many of them have lost homes, family members, and friends. The back wall of the PAZAPA building collapsed and we believe the whole building may have to be demolished. We are exploring options for temporary space to run the program as well as land to buy and a new building to construct.
